The lecture was for the 25th Conference of the Association of Social Science Teachers at Johnson C. Smith University, in which Du Bois advises the “American Negro…to take serious account of where he is and whither he is going” following impending changes in which “the American Negro will definitely become in law equal in citizenship to other Americans”.
